BAYKO Parts List - 1938 to 1941
SPECIAL SETS

Detailed on this page I have shown the complete parts lists for the, so called, special BAYKO sets #20 to #23, for their production period between 1938 and 1941.
There is no evidence, to date, that the three conversion sets included in the list were ever actually produced. Of course absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Nevertheless, I am not aware of any survivors…
Though by no means absolutely certain, it is possible that these sets were intended to replace the original Ornamental Additions sets. However, certainly in toyshop stock terms, and, I strongly suspect, production terms, there was a clear overlap.
The image [below, left] is of the model I built, and take with me to exhibitions to demonstrate the capabilities of these sets, but beware - I hate it - if it survives the journey, somebody's only got to sneeze in another room, and the all too precarious roofing section will fall off!

I hope you find this useful - if you've spotted an error in the list or want to debate any of the figures…
These special sets saw the launch of several new BAYKO parts which are highlighted, in Blue Ink, with a yellow background, in the main table [below].
The parts that are further highlighted, using Red Ink, are unique to these sets although I suspect that, in common with other BAYKO parts, the 1-Brick Pillars at least, and probably the Curved parts and my [un]favourite Orange parts were available separately.
For some, inexplicable reason, the 1-Brick Pillars were actually referred to in the contents list as if they were the standard 3-Brick Pillars, i.e. the set #23 contents of 36 were printed as 12. The numbers in the table [below] are displayed as true counts.
BAYKO sets #20 to #23 still had the original style Large Bases, but, for these sets, they were produced in a highly collectable mottled green, probably a marketing attempt to project an up-market image.

Were I your fashion correspondent, I might be tempted to say - these sets were manufactured in a red, white and pale green colour scheme, with orange accessories! The latter an [over?] exuberant response to the [then] comparatively recently established ability to make true colours in a cost-effective manner.
The unique, and most conspicuous, new feature of these sets is what you might call the 'ornamental roofing'…
…Bay Window Cover [actually here referred to as a “Pinnacle ½ Platform”]…
…Dome, Pinnacle Platform, Pinnacle Roof and all four styles of Turret…
…all of which were produced in Orange.
Of marketing interest, is the fact that we know that these manuals were also regularly included in many, if not all, of the standard BAYKO sets of the day, to encourage more people to invest in these special sets.
Manuals for these sets [right] were modest but colourful and are intended primarily to support the introduction of the significant range of new parts in these 20s series sets…
…and were the only BAYKO manuals laid out in portrait format.
There were actually two different versions of this manual…
You may want to know more about the full range of BAYKO manuals, if so…
