BAYKO Product Codes

If you are extremely well organised and administratively efficient, then perhaps you should take a deep breath before you read on, because neither Plimpton nor MECCANO, nor indeed myself, are from the same mould as you! I'm happy to accept any criticism and constructive ideas, though I'm not sure I have the administrative nous to implement them!
Plimpton appeared to have a phobia for reference numbers and most documents don't have them, even often where one theoretically existed.
Mr MECCANO had more of a 'system', but not sufficient to apply it with any consistency or logic that I can discern. For example, several export versions of the 1963 mini General Catalogue share the same code as the U.K. version [72884] while others have been designated another [72895]. Whatever the criteria used, it wasn't language.

I initially intended to create this page to list the administrative codes, used primarily by MECCANO, as part of their support systems for their BAYKO retailers, and indeed I have done so, below. However, it would've been slightly contrary not to include the full range of BAYKO Part Numbers, even if they are available elsewhere, so I've put that table towards the bottom of the page, along with any other reference numbers I've come across.
As far as the others are concerned, I've split the various administrative codes into separate tables, and have created jump links [below, in this table] to let you go straight to them, should you wish : -
Plimpton Era

MECCANO Era
For the record, I've used colour within the tables to visibly group and identify related items, and…
…to simplify - neither company using pure logic in code allocation - I do deviate from pure numerical order.
If you enjoy reading this, you may also appreciate some of the more obscure BAYKO related facts in Nerds Corner[!]…

Plimpton Era BAYKO Literature Codes

Plimpton weren't big on revealing their internal administrative codes, assuming they had them, to the outside world. They also had a habit of using a code to mean 'the latest version', i.e. not changing the code when a completely different version, or even format, was produced. Most documents, during the Plimpton era, have no coding on them - much to my frustration - which certainly doesn't help swell the table.

Compared to Plimpton, MECCANO were much more consistent in their use of administration codes, certainly once the post takeover chaos had abated. The codes below are for the main MECCANO era BAYKO retail items : -

MECCANO Era BAYKO Literature Codes

Again not all documents, in the early months, had their code printed on them, [assuming they actually had one], but after that they were pretty well universal.

I think it's fairly obvious that the 61 within the above codes refers to 1961, and similarly the 62 for 1962, and 63 for 1963. so that suggests that there may well have been, or have been planned for, other models in different years…

MECCANO Era Export Codes

Many thanks to Andrew Lance for his help with this list.
The two digit codes [below] followed, after a “/”, the standard [usually five digit] document reference number, to denote the export market at which the document was aimed.
As you can see, there are still several gaps, so I'd love to hear from you if you can help me add to the list, or can explain the apparent New Zealand duplication…
The “N.P.” entries [below] refer to documents in the appropriate language, but without prices - probably used for off shore areas.
If you'd like more information on export markets for BAYKO in particular…
Please note, there are examples of documents where, e.g. "/64" may be added as a year identifier for 1964, on a range of order forms.
