This style of Instruction Manual was first produced by Plimpton for their 'New Series' BAYKO sets, with this particular version coming from the limited post-war production of these sets. |
There was also an earlier post-war version of the 'New Series' manual, verified as such because it came in a post-war 'New Series' set. |
There is no printers code to confirm the dates, but has to be around 1946, and is clearly later than the first post-war 'New Series' manual. |
The manual was printed by Robert Johnson & Co. Ltd. of Southport, Lancashire. It comprises 34 black and white pages, including photos of models, all on glossy, white paper, with a two colour cover, printed in red and green on thicker, white paper / card. |
There are two differences between the two post-war versions of the 'New Series' manual. The offset top line of the sets list has now been corrected. More importantly, the otherwise ubiquitous long Rods offer has been reinstated. Specifically, “Any length of rod can be supplied to order.” |
|
For some reason, between the pages covered above and below this particular entry, confusion rained between the Parts List for the set contents on the inside of the front cover, and the Spare Parts price list on page 2. |
The “Pinnacle Half Platform”, as it was called when launched in the 20s series in mid 1938, was named a “Bay Window Cover” in the former, and a “Bay Window Roof” in the latter. This was never corrected in the 'New Series' period. |
An important detail, on the set contents list on the inside of the Front Cover, is that the Screws for Base Links are specified as 5BA, though this is not referenced in the Spare Parts Price List on page 2! |
|
A sad commentary on the post-war difficulties, but the price of the manual, shown on the front cover, has been jacked up by 50% from 6d [2.5p] to 9d [3.75p]. |
|
There was an earlier type-setting error on page 18 of the earlier versions [“Green Wnidows”] which has finally been corrected in this version. Given the short lifespan of this version, this starts to look, if not like an extravagance, certainly like a planning-free action! |
