BAYKO Sets #0 to #3 Instruction Manual -
March, 1949 - 1st Issue

This Instruction Manual was produced by Plimpton for their basic range of BAYKO sets - sets #0 to #3, and was the bread and butter of BAYKO's heydays, with a total of 20 issues being printed.
It is print coded March, 1949 and, as such, is the earliest version of this format, which can be easily identified by the red border to the picture on the front cover. Such manuals pre-date the introduction of sets #3X and #4 in 1951 and 1952 respectively. The print code also suggests that Plimpton printed 50,000 copies of this issue.
As well as being included in sets #0 to #3, this manual was sold separately for 1/6 [7½p].
Unlike its successors, the front cover of this issue [below] doesn't show the price of the manual in the space provided - or does it...

...all I can assume is that the order was called off from the printer in more that one batch, and that the price omission was rectified in one or more of the later batches.
The only alternative scenario I can offer, is that manuals destined to be included in sets didn't need to be priced, whilst those for retail sale did, but most sane manufacturers would run a mile before creating, and then having to manage, such unnecessary complications.
Less obvious, but still worthy of note, is the fact that the word "INSTRUCTIONS", above the pricing slot, in both versions, is printed in yellow, not the usual white.
The two parts lists on pages 1 and 33 [below] do not include prices, unlike the subsequent issues.
Pages 33 and 34 [below], are the first mentions, that I have been able to find, of Side Bricks and Side Windows, and March, 1949 is, therefore, the best date we have for their introduction.
 
It has a full colour cover, the rest of the 40 pages are printed in red, green and black on white gloss paper.
Size - 250mm x 185mm = 9.8 x 7.3 inches.
This was the 1st issue.
Number of this version that were printed - 50,000.
