BAYKO Adverts in the 'EAGLE'

Well, it's been a long, slow business, but, having only had one 'EAGLE' advert to show you for some time, I've finally been able to acquire a few more BAYKO adverts as they appeared in the 'EAGLE' comic.
'EAGLE' emerged around 1950 and was one of the first of a new generation of comics with adventure stories as well as straight cartoon strips - not all parents approved!
BAYKO was advertised widely in various parts of the UK press in the 1950s
…some, like those in the 'EAGLE', generated what we now call 'pester power'…
…others were aimed head on at parents.
It is clear, unsurprisingly, from the dates of the adverts, that BAYKO was only advertised in 'EAGLE' in the run up to Christmas.

November 28th, 1952

BAYKO advert in the November 28th, 1952 issue
This, ⅛ page, BAYKO advert was in a Christmas advertising supplement from the November 28th, 1952 issue.
The format is similar to the later advert below.

November 27th, 1953

Advert from the Eagle comic edition of 27th, November 1953.
This, ⅛ page, BAYKO advert is dated November 27th, 1953.
The format of the advert is identical to the previous year, but at least the prices have come down!

December 4th, 1953

BAYKO advert in the December 4th, 1953 issue
This, ⅛ page, next BAYKO advert was in a Christmas advertising supplement from the December 4th, 1953 issue.
The format and prices are identical to the one above.

December 1953, Undated Christmas Supplement

BAYKO advert in the undated, 1953 Advertising Supplement
This, ⅛ page, BAYKO advert was in the top right hand corner of the back page of a Christmas advertising supplement from an unspecified date. However, the mention of the "new" DINKY TOYS Car Transporter, coupled with the BAYKO Set prices quoted in this advert, places the supplement as pre-Christmas, 1953. Further confirmation comes from an advert for the SCHOLARS DIARY [price 5/6 = 27.5p] urging children to "Make sure of Full Marks in 1954".
The format and prices are identical to the advert one above.
There is one other interesting little snippet I've gleaned from this supplement - pester power in action.  Two adverts below the BAYKO advert is one for Archie Andrews Ventro Doll and a range of Puppets. In the top right hand corner the advert contains the sexist legend : -
"BOYS? The idea is to leave this where Mum and Dad can see it."

December 12th, 1954

BAYKO advert in the November 28th, 1952 issue
This next, ⅛ page, BAYKO advert was in a Christmas advertising supplement from the December 12th, 1954 issue.
The format is similar to the advert above - even the prices are the same!

November 25th, 1955

BAYKO advert from the November 25th, 1955 issue
This particular, ⅛ page, BAYKO advert was in a Christmas advertising supplement from the November 25th, 1955 issue.
The advert is identical to the one above except for the prices - which are actually lower!!!

November 23rd, 1956

BAYKO advert from the November 23rd, 1956 issue
This particular, ⅛ page, BAYKO advert was in a Christmas advertising supplement from the November 23rd, 1956 issue.
The advert is different to the one above though the lower prices have been maintained!!!

November 30th, 1956

BAYKO advert from the November 30th, 1956 issue
This particular, ⅛ page, BAYKO advert was in a Christmas advertising supplement from the November 23rd, 1956 issue.
Not too surprisingly the advert is identical to the one above.

Christmas Supplement December, 1956

Eagle Comic Christmas Advertising Supplement December, 1956
This particular, ⅛ page, BAYKO advert was in an, unfortunately, undated Christmas advertising supplement.
However, a different advert draws readers attention to a planned T.V. advert on Sunday, December 2nd, which means it must be 1956.

Unknown Christmas Supplement 1955,1957 or 1958

Advert from Christmas 1957(?) in the Eagle comic
This particular, ⅛ page, BAYKO advert was in an, unfortunately, undated Christmas advertising supplement from some time in the mid to late 1950s.
As the same image and price list appeared in an advert in the Boys' Own Paper in January, 1957, and the Christmas, 1956 advert is just above, you may well conclude, like me, that Christmas, 1957 looks favourite!

December 3rd, 1960

Advert in the December 3rd, 1960 issue of the Eagle Comic.
This BAYKO advert, dated December 3rd, 1960, is from the run-up to the first Christmas after the MECCANO takeover, and is the earliest fully MECCANO advert I can think of.
This was a half page advert, on the top half of page 10.
I actually really like this advert, which I believe, for a black and white affair, printed on mediocre newsprint, is quite eye-catching - well done Mr. MECCANO.
In case you can't read the script, here it is : -
You go to work like a real builder!
Open a box of Bayko parts. There's everything there a builder needs. Bricks of many sizes, complete windows, doors (the double ones open!), roofs, arches, even a TV aerial - everything plastic-moulded in full colour and perfect detail. Then you're off! Working like a professional, from the clear and simple Bayko plans, to make houses, railway stations, airports - anything you like. It's remarkable how good Bayko buildings look with your other models, Hornby-Dublo trains, Dinky Toy cars, etc. Remember Bayko, when Christmas ideas are wanted. It's the toy that never tires - because it's always ready when you are to build something new!
Look how it rises. You work from foundations to roof, laying your bricks and fitting your windows and doors in the framework of metal rods you've built up. Everything fits smoothly and accurately into place to become a sturdy, life-like building in miniature.
You'll build it better with BAYKO.
Bayko sets cost from 9/11 to 39/6. Accessory outfits, which enable main sets to be converted to the next size up, are available from 7/6.
The advert is almost identical to one shown in 'TIGER' comic three weeks earlier, only the order of the three models has been changed.

The information on set prices in the adverts, above and below this point, quote “9/11 to 39/6” which implies sets #11 to #14 were available, though information from elsewhere suggests that only sets #11 and #12 were released in time for Christmas, 1960. The accessory set information is [deliberately?] more vague, suggesting only “from 7/6”, which means, I believe, that set #11C was available, and possibly #12C, but I doubt very much if anything else was available.

December 17th, 1960

Advert in the December 17th, 1960 issue of the Eagle Comic.
This BAYKO advert, dated December 17th, 1960, is from the first Christmas after the MECCANO takeover.
It actually came as part of a full page advert by MECCANO - click on the advert to see an image of the full page.

I've still significant gaps to fill…
…but I'll try to fill them as soon as I can.
If you've any copies of 'EAGLE' with BAYKO adverts, which I could scan for inclusion here, then I'd love to hear from you…
